FIRE - dramatic shades of red, with orange and blue.
Thousands of years ago, the Chinese developed a design system for arranging objects to create spatial harmony. It incorporates the five elements to increase the vital energy or chi.
Let's explore the Fire element. Fire is a power element tied to action, passion, and fame. It's wonderful for attracting clients, improving your social life, and supports getting your light out in the world. While it's important to balance each element and not have an excess of any, Patricia Lohan, Feng Shui expert, warns especially against playing with fire, because it can elevate strong creative energy but, in excess, it can make you burn out fast.
"I would minimize the color red, which represents the energy of fire. Just like a real fire, it can cause a lot of damage, go out of control, and be very dangerous," Lohan says. "Too much fire can irritate people.”
Fire represents fame, inspiration, and our visibility. It’s also related to our passion and emotional expression. Keeping your emotions inside and swallowing your feelings may be signs that you need more fire energy. To add fire through color, go for reds and fiery oranges. You may want to keep these colors out of any rooms where you intend to relax and be refreshed, as they can be very intense and stimulating!
If you’re comfortable with these colors (or if you’re not, and you want to challenge yourself!), you can look for a red chair or table for a bold pop of color. For something a little more subdued, try a throw blanket on your couch, or accent pillows. If you're feeling a little more bold, try artwork with fiery colors. Emergent painter, Tom Boatright, explores bold colors with his artisan oils. He has a bespoke commission process that is sure to help you bring the fire element, subdued or bold, into your space.
